Monday Mournings

Ten more things to be thankful for:

1. A new box of Crayola crayons, with its waxy smell and each crayon with unmarred, blunted tips

2. Loamy Maine woods, scented with balsam fir

3. Learning how to drive a motorcycle and whumping over ruts in the yard, your kid’s arms clenched tight around your waist

4. Climbing gnarled, ancient trees with sloping crooks designed for nestling

5. Kids’ no-neck drawings of human beings, with arms sticking out of the side of heads and “I love you mama you are nice to me” written below

6. A family cult movie like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles that you can quote from throughout the year as “inside” jokes

7. Homemade mashed potatoes and noodles, piled high on a plate

8. Running on chilling, dewy grass in bare feet at twilight, trying to cup fireflies in your hands

9. Huge, boxy sweatshirts and worn jeans

10. Pachobel’s Canon in D
