sweet sounds of communion

images (2) Yesterday at church we celebrated communion; in our congregation, we wait to take the elements until they’ve been passed to everyone. Then, after a reflection by one of the congregants, we all take the elements together. With my eyes closed, I lifted the bread to my mouth; the quietness of my motion was amplified in the shared movement of everyone else in the room–a soft stir echoed in the air, and I felt the presence of God in the sanctuary, the taste of God in my mouth, the body of Christ in my own in the shared act of collectively remembering Him. This is true Church, and why I will never abandon meeting with fellow believers.
